Beauty
Products How They Are Tested!
Beauty products have to be tested effectively
before they can be put out on the market for people to use.
Since the majority of products are applied directly to the skin
or used in other sensitive areas, it’s an absolute necessity to
make sure the products will do what they claim do to and not
cause any kind of allergic reaction.
This has caused trouble for some major
product manufacturers. The source of their problem lied in how
they did the testing for the beauty products. These companies
used lab animals to test their products. Once word of this got
out thru the media, it caused major consumer backlash.
Organizations like PETA (people for the ethnical treatment of
animals), produced campaigns urging consumers to boycott
companies that test on animals. The company’s labs were
infiltrated and candid pictures of suffering animals were taken
and used in television and magazine ads.
The beauty products companies tried to defend
themselves by stating it is legally required by trade and
consumer protection laws to prove their products are not toxic
or dangerous. Due to modern technology, there have been a few
alternatives to animal testing developed. Computer modeling was
developed to calculate the reaction of the product to certain
areas of the body. There is also the process of culturing
cells, when the cells reach a certain level of development; the
beauty product is introduced to test for a reaction. Even
though both the alternatives are ideal to avoid animal testing,
computer modeling is not one-hundred percent sure and cell
cultivation takes more time than most companies are willing to
spend on testing.
Some companies have figured out ways around
animal testing. Some will use products that have been
previously tested on animals so their results are already
documented. They also do patch testing on human volunteers.
Most beauty products companies do not want to test on animals.
It has become expensive, is morally contentious, and is
horrific for their public image. Fortunately most companies do
not test on animals as much as they used to. The incidence of
animal testing has been reduced in the past few decades and
hopefully the beauty products industry will find a permanent,
non animal solution.
